What Is Jiu Jitsu? A Complete Beginner's Guide
Jiu jitsu is a grappling sport with no punching or kicking. Here's what it actually looks like, who it's for, and why so many people get hooked.
What is jiu jitsu?
Jiu jitsu is a grappling sport. No punching, no kicking. The goal is to control your opponent using your whole body, and if the opportunity presents itself, get them to surrender with a submission hold (a joint lock or a choke).
When someone is caught, they “tap” — a pat on their partner, the mat, or a verbal “tap” — and the round resets. Tapping is how we keep each other safe. It’s not losing. It’s what lets everyone train again tomorrow.
Most of jiu jitsu is played on the ground. You’ll spend time in positions like guard (where your legs are between you and your partner), pins (where one person is controlling the other), and scrambles (the chaotic transitions between everything else).
Who is it for?
Everyone. Seriously.
You don’t need to be in shape. You don’t need athletic experience. You don’t need to be young, flexible, or tough. Jiu jitsu is how you build those things, not a prerequisite for starting.
At Golden Jiu Jitsu, our members range from their early 20s to their 50s. Some were athletes before. Most weren’t. What they have in common is that they showed up, tried it, and got hooked.
What does a class look like?
At GJJ, you won’t stand in a line and repeat choreographed sequences. You’ll play structured grappling games with a partner, each with specific goals and win conditions. You’ll learn a concept that applies across multiple positions, then use it while playing.
Every class covers at least two different types of grappling situations, and most of your time is spent playing, not watching a coach talk.
Why do people get hooked?
Three reasons come up over and over:
It’s a genuine workout without feeling like exercise. You’re solving problems with your body, not counting reps. An hour goes by fast.
The community. Grappling creates a kind of trust and vulnerability that builds real friendships. People come for the training and stay for the people.
The problem-solving is endlessly deep. There’s always something new to figure out. It never gets boring.
