Adults training jiu jitsu at Golden Jiu Jitsu in Golden, Colorado

What You'll Actually Do in Class

No lines, no choreographed sequences, no watching a coach talk for thirty minutes.

You'll play structured grappling games with a training partner. Each game has a specific starting position, a goal, and win conditions for both players. You'll learn a concept, then immediately use it while playing.

Every class covers at least two different types of grappling situations. Most of your time is spent playing, not watching.

Games instead of drilling

You learn by doing, not by watching a demo and repeating the same move in a vacuum.

Both sides of every position

You practice attacking and defending every position. You understand both roles.

Concepts, not sequences

You build a framework for grappling, not a library of moves to memorize.

No pressure live rolling

Open rolling after the 60-minute class is optional. There is no pressure to stay for it.

How We're Different

Most gyms: show up, watch a coach demo whatever is on their mind, drill a choreographed sequence for thirty minutes, then get thrown into open sparring with people years ahead of you. No curriculum, no structure, no thought given to how people actually learn.

We do things differently. Our classes are built around positional games with specific goals, not open-ended sparring where beginners default to survival mode. Our coaches study how people learn, not just what to teach. We have an actual curriculum with intentional pacing and every class session is designed in advance.

We're not a technique-of-the-day gym. Every class is intentionally designed, coached with purpose, and built around your long-term development.

Structured curriculum

Every class fits into a larger progression. Nothing is random.

Coaches who study learning

Our coaches study how people learn, not just what to teach.

No-gi only

All Fundamentals classes are no-gi. No uniform required.

Safety and Culture

You can stop any round at any time. Tapping is normal, expected, and respected. It's not losing. It's what lets everyone train tomorrow.

Intensity is explicitly managed. Coaches watch for movement quality and playfulness, not who wins. Nobody is keeping score.

When people feel safe to fail, they take risks. When they take risks, they learn faster. When they learn faster, they have more fun. That sense of safety doesn't happen by accident. We build it into every class, every interaction, every day.

If you're new, you'll lose a lot of games. That's not a problem. Working on new skills means losing more, and that's the point.

Tapping is normal

Everyone taps. It signals safety. You'll do it your first class.

Managed intensity

Coaches set the tone. Nobody goes harder than what's appropriate for the room.

Playful culture

Training feels like play, not competition. Give and take, not ego.

What to Expect Your First Day

Here's exactly what happens when you come in.

Arrive 15 minutes early

A coach will meet you at the door, show you around, and walk you through what to expect. We can't skip this, so please don't arrive right at class time.

Warm up with the class

You'll warm up alongside everyone else. No prior experience needed to follow along.

Play games with a partner

A coach pairs you with an experienced member who knows how to work with new people. You play the same games as everyone else, with adjustments for your level.

Optional open rolling after class

Live sparring happens after the 60-minute class. It's completely optional. No pressure, no judgment.

What Members Say

" I hadn't worked out in years and was convinced I'd embarrass myself. Everyone was patient and genuinely helpful. I had no idea what I was doing my first class, but I had fun. That was six months ago and I haven't stopped. "

" I trained at another gym for two years and felt like I was just doing the same drills over and over. The game-based approach here is completely different. I learned more about positioning in my first month than I did in two years at my old gym. "

Common Questions

Do I need to be in shape first?

No. You don't get in shape first and then come to jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu is how you get in shape. Show up as you are. The training takes care of the rest.

What do I wear?

Athletic shorts with no pockets, no velcro, no buttons, and no zippers. A fitted t-shirt or rash guard on top. No shoes or socks on the mats. If you don't have gear yet, we have loaners.

I'm worried about age or injuries. Is this realistic for me?

Jiu jitsu is one of the most accessible grappling sports for people of different ages, sizes, and fitness levels because technique and leverage matter more than raw strength. We have members in their 40s and 50s who started with no experience. That said, it is a contact sport. Talk to your doctor if you have specific health concerns, and let a coach know before class.

What happens in the 60-minute class? Is there live sparring?

You'll warm up, learn a concept, then play structured grappling games with a training partner. No live rolling (open sparring) happens inside the 60-minute class. Optional open rolling happens after class for people who want it. There's no pressure to stay.

I've trained somewhere else. Will I fit in?

Come try a class and see. Golden Jiu Jitsu is game-based, not technique-of-the-day. The culture is explicitly playful. Intensity norms and the approach to training may differ from what you're used to. Most people who've trained elsewhere find the structure refreshing.
